Malibu Colony and Civic Center is the closest thing Malibu has to a town center, pairing a famous gated beach enclave with the shopping, parks and city buildings around Cross Creek Road. Homes run from beach houses packed tightly along the Colony shoreline to hillside houses above the Civic Center in Malibu Knolls. Along Malibu Road, homes on the ocean side sit on narrow beach lots, while the land side has larger parcels. Outdoors, Malibu Lagoon State Beach and Surfrider Beach draw surfers to the long right-hand break at First Point, and the lagoon trails are a quiet walk among shorebirds. Legacy Park, next to the Malibu Library, has walking paths and hosts the Sunday farmers market. Alfred Coffee in the Malibu Country Mart is a regular stop, and Tra Di Noi, also at the Mart, is known for big gnocchi in veal ragu. Taverna Tony serves grilled octopus and whole branzino, often with live music, and Broad Street Oyster Company on PCH is known for clam chowder and a butter-soaked lobster roll. The tradeoff is traffic and crowds. Cross Creek Road and PCH back up on summer weekends, and parking at the Mart and the beach fills fast. Malibu Colony and Civic Center also sits right where Malibu Canyon Road meets the coast, so it absorbs a lot of commuter traffic. Weekends here often mean running into neighbors at the farmers market, then walking over to watch surfers at First Point.
