Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: McClymonds High legacy, DeFremery Park nearby, Historic West Oakland

McClymonds is a West Oakland neighborhood built around the high school that has stood here since 1915, the only OUSD comprehensive high school west of downtown and a genuine local institution. Its alumni run from Bill Russell to MC Hammer to Ron Dellums, and the school's athletic legacy is woven into the area's identity. The surrounding blocks, around 26th and Myrtle, hold Victorians and early bungalows on a flat grid, much of it shaped, and scarred, by the mid-century urban renewal and freeway projects that remade West Oakland. The neighborhood's green anchor is DeFremery Park nearby, Oakland's first municipal playground, set around an 1860s Victorian mansion and carrying deep history as a Black Panther Party gathering place; it still hosts the annual Lil' Bobby Hutton memorial. Daily errands lean on San Pablo and Market and a car, with West Oakland BART a short distance off for a one-stop ride under the Bay. Retail inside the boundary is thin. McClymonds is a neighborhood that carries its history openly, the school, the park, and the Black freedom struggle that ran through these streets. The honest read for buyers is the West Oakland one: central location, BART access, and real character set against the legacy of freeway-era disinvestment, limited retail, and the safety concerns the area still works through.
