Mission Beach is a strip of sand barely a few blocks wide, with the Pacific on one side and the calm water of Mission Bay on the other. The San Diego neighborhood runs for nearly two miles from the jetty at the San Diego River mouth north to Pacific Beach, and Mission Boulevard runs its full length. No part of the city is packed tighter. Most homes started as summer cottages in the 1930s and 1940s, with a handful from the 1920s, on the smallest lots in San Diego. Many have since been rebuilt as two-story houses that fill their lots, set shoulder to shoulder along the short streets that run off Mission Boulevard toward the sand on one side and the bay on the other. The beach is everyday life here. A paved boardwalk runs about three miles along the ocean from here up through Pacific Beach, busy with bikes, skaters and runners, and courts for beach volleyball and basketball sit right on the sand. The bay side has its own quieter walkway, plus a grassy park at Mariners Point near the south end. Belmont Park anchors the southern half of the peninsula. John D. Spreckels opened it in 1925 to sell lots, and the original wooden Giant Dipper coaster still runs beside the Plunge, a saltwater pool that reopened in 2019. Breakfast is a local ritual. The Mission, on Mission Boulevard, serves chorizo and eggs, sweet and savory tamales and rosemary bread, and the first-come line often stretches out the door. Lazy Eye Coffee runs a walk-up and drive-thru window on the south end for coffee and breakfast burritos, and Belmont Park adds taco stands, burgers and ice cream. Mission Market and a few corner stores handle quick needs, but a real grocery run means heading north to the Ralphs on Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. West Mission Bay Drive is the road off the peninsula, and plenty of short trips happen on a bike instead. Crowds come with the address. Summer weekends fill the boardwalk and the bayside lawns, and parking near the beach is scarce. Mission Beach makes up for it on weekday mornings, when the boardwalk belongs to joggers and the bayside path is close to empty.
