Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Montclair Village shops, Community park hub, Hillside-meets-main-street

Wedged between Highway 13 and the lower slopes of the hills, this slender neighborhood runs along Mountain Boulevard and Moraga Avenue, folding the Montclair Village commercial core into a strip of adjoining hillside streets. The land climbs quickly east of the boulevard, so small Craftsman bungalows and mid-century ranches perch on short, winding spurs like Lucas and Snake Road, while storefronts and low-rise offices line the flatter western edge. Redwoods and London planes shade the sidewalks and soften the traffic funneling toward the freeway. Inside the boundary you can handle nearly every daily need on foot: cafes, a Saturday farmers market, grocery anchors, and long-running favorites like the Montclair Egg Shop. Montclair Park sits at the north end with tennis courts, a duck pond, and a playground, and the branch library and Railroad Trailhead are a couple of blocks south. Continuous sidewalks, marked crossings, and pocket seating make it easy to push a stroller or walk a dog, though grades steepen noticeably once you leave the commercial spine. The area feels lively and neighborly without tipping into nightlife, well-kept storefronts and tidy uphill front gardens projecting a comfortable, walk-out-your-door energy. It is the unusual case of a true village main street set against a wooded hillside, which is exactly what holds its appeal.
