Neighborhood Review

Key Words:

Village shops and cafés, Railroad trail network, Wooded hillside streets

Spread across wooded hillsides on both sides of Mountain Boulevard, Montclair unfolds along curving roads like Estates Drive, Balboa Drive, and Heartwood Drive. Homes sit on sloped lots tucked into redwoods and live oaks, ranging from 1920s Storybook cottages and mid-century ranches to larger custom rebuilds with wide decks. The terrain rises quickly above the canyon floor, giving many properties filtered bay or canyon views and a feeling of seclusion even though the neighborhood sits just minutes from Highway 13. Outdoor access is front and center. The paved Montclair Railroad Trail threads through the neighborhood, linking Montclair Park’s playground, pond, and sports courts with Shepherd Canyon Park’s open fields. Multiple spur paths head up to Huckleberry and Redwood preserves. While most interior streets lack continuous sidewalks, traffic is light and the flat rail-trail makes stroller or dog-walk loops easy. Everyday errands happen a block or two outside the boundary at Montclair Village, where grocery stores, cafés, and the Saturday farmers market cluster along Mountain Boulevard and La Salle Avenue. The overall vibe is relaxed, well kept, and community oriented. Mature landscaping, restored period details, and new hillside builds create strong curb presence, and residents make frequent use of both the trails and the village’s walk-out amenities. Quick freeway and Transbay bus access round out the convenience without compromising the leafy, small-town atmosphere.
