Montevideo is one of those planned Almaden-area tracts that has quietly aged into its trees. Built in the 1960s on old vineyard land near Camden Avenue and Coleman Road, it runs to detached ranch, split-level and two-story homes on comfortable lots, and it kept a community cabana and pool that still gives the neighborhood a center of gravity. The streets are broad and shaded, and there is a settled pride-of-ownership feel that comes from a lot of long-tenured owners. It sits close enough to the Almaden Expressway corridor that shopping and the freeways are an easy drive, without the arterial noise running through the middle of it. The tradeoffs are the ones that come with the era: the housing stock is older, and like everything down here it is car-first, with no rail and errands a short drive off. If you want a quiet, established south-valley street with a pool club thrown in, Montevideo is an easy one to like.
