North Lancaster is the big, open end of the city, running from the edge of the west side subdivisions up toward the Kern County line, and the thing that sets it apart is sky. General William J. Newer subdivisions sit closest to town on the southern edge, while farther north the pattern loosens into single homes on large desert parcels, some reached by unpaved roads. Manufactured-home communities such as Leisure Lake Mobile Estates on 20th Street West fill in part of the map. Expect big lots, wide views and plenty of open desert between neighbors. Apollo Community Regional Park on Avenue G is the main outdoor draw. The county park is built around a lake, and its youth fishing derby has been a summer fixture since the park's first years in the 1970s. Foxy's Landing, a diner on the airfield grounds, is the local breakfast stop. For more, you head south or west. Boba Cove & Cafe on Valley Central Way handles tea and snacks at the southern edge. In spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is a short drive west, with around seven miles of trails through the fields when the bloom comes in, roughly mid-February to mid-May. Daily life in North Lancaster runs on the car. Groceries mean a drive to the Valley Central Way centers, where Food 4 Less and Vallarta sit, or to the stores along Avenue L. The tradeoff is distance. Restaurants, schools and errands all sit several miles south, and many of the outer parcels have no sidewalks or streetlights. What you get in return is space and quiet, broken mostly by the sound of a tanker climbing out of Fox Field on its way to a smoke column somewhere on the horizon.
