North Texas is where Fairfield does its shopping. The enclosed Solano Town Center, a quick hop from the freeway on Travis Boulevard, has anchored the area since the early 1980s, and stores, theaters and restaurant rows have filled in around it. Dave & Buster's arrived in 2021, and the mall also holds an art gallery and a food court. Housing is mixed. Apartment complexes and townhome clusters sit behind the commercial frontage, and between them are older tract houses on short residential streets, mostly one story with small yards. A quiet block is easy to find once you turn off Texas Street or Travis. Hillview Park, on Atlantic Avenue, has a play area, exercise equipment and a big lawn with picnic areas. Veterans Memorial Park, on Fairfield Avenue, adds walking paths and a toddler swing set. Sutter's Landing Dog Park gives dogs a place of their own. Anything wilder, like the trails at Rockville Hills, means a drive across town. Eating out is the easy part. Che'yla's Southern Cuisine on Travis Boulevard is the soul food stop, Los Molcajetes Taquería covers tacos and burritos, and Pho Saigon #1 is where people go for noodle soup. The Original Mels Diner handles breakfast and burgers when the group wants a booth. Groceries take no planning. Trader Joe's, Safeway and FoodMaxx all sit inside the neighborhood, and a Regal theater is close to the mall. Nearly everything is a drive, though the flat blocks near the mall work for a stroller or a bike, and the freeway on-ramps are only minutes away. The theater and the arcade restaurant make this the default night out for much of the city. Traffic is the cost of all that convenience. Texas Street and Travis Boulevard stay busy from lunch to early evening, and the mall's parking lots fill up in the holiday season. Most people in North Texas simply learn which side streets to take.
