This is the airport itself, the land occupied by Oakland International and its runways, terminals, and supporting facilities on the bay side of deep East Oakland. It is not a residential neighborhood in any sense; the footprint is aviation infrastructure, leased largely from the Port of Oakland, hemmed by Doolittle Drive, the bay, and the industrial corridors that feed it. What sits alongside it, though, is genuinely worth knowing. The Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline wraps the airport's bay edge with more than 700 acres protecting the marshes of San Leandro Bay, including the 50-acre Arrowhead Marsh, a major stopover on the Pacific Flyway and a destination for birders. A stretch of the Bay Trail, a boat launch, and the MLK Memorial Grove give the shoreline a real, if discontinuous, public realm against the backdrop of jet traffic. As a place, this entry is best read as airport-and-shoreline rather than a neighborhood. There is no residential fabric, no walkable retail, and the public realm is the regional shoreline rather than streets and yards. Its character is defined by the airport's constant activity on one side and a quietly significant tidal marsh on the other.
