Old Oakland is the city's best-preserved 19th-century quarter, a downtown district centered on Washington and 9th that still holds block after block of Italianate and Victorian commercial buildings. The heart of it is Victorian Row, a stretch of 1860s-to-80s storefronts that developers carefully restored in the 1970s and 80s, lending the area a cohesive, postcard-historic streetscape rare in downtown Oakland. Housing here is mostly upper-floor units and lofts above the retail. The district punches well above its size on amenities. Swan's Market, a restored indoor-outdoor hall, gathers restaurants and small businesses around a courtyard, and the Friday farmers market on 9th Street is billed as one of the oldest continuously running open-air markets in the country. Restaurants, breweries, and specialty shops fill the ground floors, and the location is unbeatable for transit, with 12th Street BART, City Center, and Chinatown all a few flat blocks away. Green space inside the boundary is limited, with the lake and Ogawa Plaza nearby instead. Old Oakland's pitch is its architecture and its walkability, a genuinely handsome historic core where you can live above a 150-year-old facade and handle a week's errands on foot. The honest tradeoffs are the downtown realities: scarce parking, limited private green space, and a street scene that still runs uneven block to block, but the restored Victorian fabric gives it a character nothing newer can match.
