German settlers started a farming colony on these hills in the 1890s and named it for an olive grove, and Olivenhain still feels like a country district attached to the east side of Encinitas. Rancho Santa Fe begins right where it ends on the east, and Rancho Santa Fe Road serves as the main way in and out. Homes are mostly custom houses on big lots spread across rolling ground, with small roads curving through the hills instead of running in a grid. Plenty of properties come with horse facilities and large yards, and private equestrian stables are part of the landscape. Trails often stand in for sidewalks, and a dark-sky policy keeps streetlights and other outdoor lighting low, so the stars show up better here than they do near the coast. The City's trail system is more extensive in Olivenhain than anywhere else in Encinitas, and hikers, cyclists and riders on horseback all share it. Manchester Preserve, which the community shares with New Encinitas, adds foot-only dirt paths through protected land. Late in the afternoon, hot air balloons often drift overhead. The Olivenhain Meeting Hall on Rancho Santa Fe Road is the center of things. Settlers built the wood-frame hall in 1894 and 1895, it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993, and it still hosts Oktoberfest, a haunted house, summer movies, craft fairs and plenty of weddings. For a meal out, Firenze Trattoria on South Rancho Santa Fe Road serves Italian dishes on a patio with a fountain and lanterns, and its lasagna has a following. Almost every errand involves a drive. The nearest big supermarkets are along El Camino Real in New Encinitas or across the city line at the Vons on Via Montebello in Carlsbad. Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary is the local public school, and reaching I-5 means driving west through New Encinitas. Living out here means giving up the walk to coffee and the beach that the coastal communities take for granted. In return, evenings in Olivenhain are dark and quiet enough to hear horses in the next pasture.
