Leucadia stretches along the north end of Encinitas, from the bluffs above the surf up to Batiquitos Lagoon and the Carlsbad line, and its unofficial motto is Keep Leucadia Funky. North Coast Highway 101 is the spine, lined with surf shops, galleries, taco counters and small patios that each look a little different from the one next door. Homes in Leucadia lean older and a bit unpolished. Vintage beach cottages share streets with modern rebuilds, and the mature trees and bluff-top views matter more than any single style. Many streets near the 101 are named for Greek gods, so streets like Hermes and Orpheus run a few blocks from the sand. The City has been rebuilding the northern stretch of the highway since 2024 with roundabouts, wider sidewalks, bike lanes and hundreds of new trees. Beach access comes down the bluff. Beacon's Beach sits at the south end of Leucadia State Beach, reached by a winding path, and Grandview at the north end has a staircase and a regular crowd of surfers. Inland, Indian Head Canyon offers trail access for hikers, cyclists and riders. Pannikin Coffee & Tea has poured for decades out of a yellow Victorian building that once served as the Encinitas train depot, with a shaded patio out front. Fish tacos are the big order at Haggo's Organic Taco, which once landed on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, while Coffee Coffee gets the photo stops thanks to a retro welcome mural on its wall. Down the block, Solterra Winery & Kitchen makes its wine on site and pairs it with Mediterranean plates. Out east, Fox Point Farms mixes a regenerative farm with a brewery and a farm-to-table restaurant. Errands mostly mean a short drive, since the bigger grocery runs happen in Old Encinitas to the south or along El Camino Real. The Encinitas Coaster station is a few minutes south, and the highway's bike lanes make the 101 an easy ride. Parking near the beach stairs is scarce, because most access points sit right inside residential blocks with no lot. People who live within walking distance of the bluff stop worrying about it, and the walk down to Beacon's becomes part of the morning.
