Otay Mesa is the working end of San Diego, a broad plateau of warehouses, truck yards and border infrastructure that stretches east from Interstate 805 toward unincorporated East Otay Mesa and south to Tijuana. Most of the land is given over to industry and trade, and only a few small pockets of housing sit inside the area today. Aviation history runs deep. John J. Montgomery flew gliders off the western rim of the mesa in 1883, and Brown Field Municipal Airport opened as an Army field in 1918, served the Navy on and off for two decades and became a city airport in 1962. Its nearly 8,000-foot runway still draws private jets clearing customs and military transports. The border shapes everything else. Commercial trucks use the port of entry here rather than San Ysidro, and the Cross Border Xpress terminal, opened in 2015, lets travelers walk a bridge straight into Tijuana's airport. State Route 905, the SR 125 toll road and SR 11 carry most of the traffic. Homes are starting to arrive. Cornerstone Communities' Candlelight project was approved for 450 townhomes, the Collection at Cactus was approved in 2026 for 985 townhomes and apartments near Airway Road and Cactus Road, and the larger Southwest Village plan calls for more than 5,000 homes, a school and parkland on open land south of the 905. For now, food follows the workday. Cocina 35 on Airway Road opens at 8 a.m. and is known for its chilaquiles in several styles. Pacific Gateway Park fills a strip south of Otay Mesa Road toward the border, and Otay Valley Regional Park lies to the north. Walking is barely an option. Otay Mesa ranks among the least walkable parts of the city, and big rigs dominate the roads at most hours. What Otay Mesa offers today is jobs, a border crossing and an airport, with a new neighborhood slowly being drawn in around them.
