Pacific Grove Retreat is the stretch of the city where the public library, a certified farmers market and a string of shoreline parks all sit close together. It runs along the bay side of town, and the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail passes through it, linking the town to the Cannery Row district next door. Development isn't allowed on the water side of the ocean-front street, which keeps the shore open to everyone. Housing is denser here than in most of town, a mix of older houses and multi-unit buildings on tight blocks, with the Victorian and Craftsman character the town is known for showing up on many of them. It's among the more built-up parts of town, and it feels busy in a good way. Parks fill the map. Berwick Park, Jewell Park, Caledonia Park and Greenwood Park are all inside the neighborhood, along with Andy Jacobsen Park, Shoreline Park and an overlook above the beach at 8th Street. The paved trail gets runners and cyclists at all hours, and Lovers Point Park lies just past the edge. Happy Girl Kitchen Co on Central Avenue is the breakfast stop locals know, a cafe attached to a working cannery that sells its own pickles, jams and shrubs, open daily from seven. First Awakenings, inside the American Tin Cannery on Ocean View Boulevard, serves Belgian waffles and a big breakfast burrito and has a patio that welcomes dogs. Hops and Fog Brewing Company sits just over the edge on Lighthouse Avenue for beer and pizza in the evening. Daily life is on foot. The library, the market and the cafes are all within a stroll, and the big grocery stores on Forest Avenue are a drive. With so many visitors drawn to the water, summer weekends bring full parking and slow foot traffic along the trail. Pacific Grove Retreat puts the library, the breakfast spots and the beach path on the same few streets, so one afternoon walk can cover all of them. The walkable bayfront is the defining luxury, with daily errands and the shoreline sharing the same compact grid.
