Palm City sits where Interstate 5 meets State Route 75 in southern San Diego, the junction that sends traffic out the Silver Strand toward Imperial Beach and Coronado. Chula Vista starts just to the north, Nestor lies to the west, and the neighborhood took its name in 1914 from the palms planted along Palm Avenue. Its past runs to farming and early flight. Farms worked the land here before World War II, and in the 1880s John J. Montgomery tested gliders on the nearby Otay Mesa hillsides, which is why the stretch of I-5 through town carries his name. The city annexed Palm City in 1957, and most homes date from the decades after, sharing the area with freeway ramps and two shopping centers. The Otay River runs along the northern side, and Otay Valley Regional Park follows it with 8.3 miles of trails and seven ponds for birdwatching. Its ranger station is on Beyer Boulevard. Closer to home, Sunnyslope Park on Elm Avenue is the neighborhood park. Food is casual and mostly on the go. Taco shops and a few small kitchens fill the strip centers along Palm Avenue and Hollister Street, so a burrito or a plate to go is rarely more than a few minutes away. Getting around is the neighborhood's strong point. The Blue Line stops at Palm Avenue station, and I-5 runs right through, so downtown and the border are both easy reaches. For groceries, Northgate González Market on Coronado Avenue and Vons on Saturn Boulevard sit a few blocks outside the neighborhood, with a branch library close to Northgate. Freeway noise and wide arterial roads shape much of daily life, and most walking happens beside busy traffic. In exchange comes location, with the trolley, the Strand and the river valley trails all close at hand from one small neighborhood.
