Voltaire Street is the spine of Point Loma Heights, the San Diego neighborhood on the slope between Ocean Beach and Loma Portal. It rises from the San Diego River and Midway Drive at the north end up toward Point Loma Avenue and Chatsworth Boulevard, with Nimitz Boulevard along its eastern side. Homes change as you climb. Older single-family houses fill the blocks near the Ocean Beach line and on Catalina Boulevard, while the northern end near Midway leans toward multi-family buildings. The subdivisions people search for, Ocean Beach Highlands, Loma Palisades, Point Loma Highlands and Loma Alta, all sit inside the neighborhood, and the higher streets get a wide panorama over Nimitz. Two commercial strips handle most of daily life. Voltaire Street has the smaller, more local shops, and West Point Loma Boulevard has Midway Towne Center and its larger stores. Barons Market on West Point Loma Boulevard and Vons on Midway Drive cover groceries, and the Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library sits right on Voltaire. Kakawa Coffee on Voltaire pours coffee rooted in Syrian and Venezuelan traditions, and it closes early in the afternoon, so go in the morning. Cesarina, a few blocks west, is known for fresh pasta and pastries made where diners can watch, with plenty of vegan options. Stella Jean's Ice Cream, in the same stretch, scoops small-batch flavors into homemade waffle cones, and the seasonal list runs to things like Thai tea with salted cream. Collier Park, near Soto and Greene streets, and Bill Cleator Park along Nimitz Boulevard give the neighborhood its green space. The bigger draw is how close the coast is. Dog Beach, the Robb Field fields and the Ocean Beach shoreline are just over the western edge, and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a few minutes south. Getting around means Nimitz Boulevard or West Point Loma Boulevard out toward Midway, the I-8 and the I-5. The north end of the neighborhood borders Midway's wide roads and strip malls, so the lower blocks feel more commercial and more traffic-heavy than the streets higher up the hill. What sets Point Loma Heights apart is that it puts Voltaire Street errands, Ocean Beach's waves and a hillside view within the same few minutes. Many mornings start with coffee on Voltaire and end with a walk down to the water.
