Princeton Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Pillar Point Harbor, Mavericks, Pilot Light Cafe

Princeton is the harbor side of Moss Beach, the working edge of the San Mateo County coast, where the Pillar Point Harbor breakwater curls around fishing boats and charter docks. Mavericks, the big-wave break, forms just off the point, and in winter the whole place hums when the swell is up. Housing is modest and varied. Small older cottages sit near the water, newer houses climb the slopes behind them, and boatyards and storage lots are scattered between. The look is practical more than polished, and a boat trailer next to a driveway is a normal sight. Pillar Point Bluff is the main walk, a headland where the Coastal Trail crosses the top, with views over the harbor and Half Moon Bay. The easy route out toward the Mavericks cliffs takes about an hour. Ross' Cove and Princeton Harbor Beach are small sandy stops, and the harbor wall is where people stroll and watch the boats come in. Pilot Light Cafe, out at the airport, is a family-run breakfast and lunch place that serves from 8 until 2 and lets you watch planes land. Barbara's Fishtrap, up Capistrano Road, has fried seafood on the harbor since 1971, and Hop Dogma Brewing Company on the same road is the casual beer stop. For coffee, most people head up to The Press in El Granada. Highway 1 runs along the east side. Half Moon Bay's grocery stores are a few miles south, and Coastside Market up in Moss Beach is the closer run for basics. Almost everyone drives, though the flat streets around the harbor are easy to cover on foot once you have parked. Princeton trades quiet for activity. Fishing boats leave early, big swells draw crowds in winter, and visitor traffic clogs the roads near the water. People who want a working harbor outside the door tend to take that rhythm in stride.
