Rancho Palos Verdes holds an overall Houseberry score of 4.0/5. Its standout factors are public spaces (4.4/5) and safety (4.3/5). The trade-off is nearby merchants (1.6/5).
Rancho Palos Verdes wraps around most of the Palos Verdes Peninsula's southern coast and hillsides, and it's mostly homes, bluffs and open land with very little commercial space. Homes are nearly all single-family, most built from the 1960s onward, and a lot of them are four-bedroom ranch or contemporary houses on hillside lots facing the ocean or the harbor. A few areas keep equestrian properties. Houses on the west side sit farther apart than the tracts near Western Avenue. It covers roughly 260 acres and has been moving since road construction set it off in 1956, and it sped up sharply in 2023 and 2024, when gas and power were cut to homes in Portuguese Bend, Seaview and Abalone Cove. Gas is still off in Portuguese Bend, and Palos Verdes Drive South stays open with ongoing patching. That same movement has closed about eight miles of trails across four nature reserves for now, Portuguese Bend and Forrestal among them. Point Vicente is the easy outdoor stop, with an interpretive center that shows off the old lighthouse lens and a bluff where people watch for migrating gray whales from December through mid-May. Mar'sel at Terranea has ocean views, a fireplace and a house-made English muffin people talk about, and it's listed in the Michelin Guide. For coffee and pastries, Yellow Vase at Golden Cove doubles as a bakery and flower shop. Rancho Palos Verdes has no rail and not much to walk to, so nearly every trip is a drive on Hawthorne, Western or Palos Verdes Drive. In winter, a pair of binoculars in the car turns a quick errand past Point Vicente into a whale check.
