Saint Rose holds a real distinction: it was the very first neighborhood Santa Rosa designated as a historic preservation district, protected precisely because its location near downtown made it the most vulnerable to redevelopment. The district grew up around the Church of St. Rose, a Gothic Revival stone structure built by Italian stonemasons in 1900 that famously rode out the 1906 earthquake nearly unscathed. The homes are the reason to be here. The district holds several of Santa Rosa's grandest surviving 19th-century houses alongside rows of well-kept 1920s bungalows, like those on Lincoln Street, originally built for the city's tradespeople. It is a compact, walkable, intact piece of old Santa Rosa, with downtown's restaurants and the train station a short stroll away. The honest part is the near-downtown reality: small lots, tight parking, and older homes that demand maintenance and sometimes historic-district review for changes. But for buyers who value architecture, walkability, and the security of a protected streetscape over square footage and new construction, Saint Rose is one of the most special small districts in the county.
