San Luis Rey takes its name from the mission on Mission Avenue, which Spanish padres established in 1798 and which still serves as a parish, with a museum and gardens open to visitors. This part of Oceanside traces the river and State Route 76 inland, and it mixes everyday shopping with the oldest history in the city. Homes come in pockets rather than one big tract. Older single-family streets sit beside twin homes and condo complexes on North El Camino Real. River Ranch on Spring Canyon Way is gated, and Rancho San Luis Rey has newer custom houses. Plenty of complexes share a pool or tennis courts, and yards lean compact. The river is the outdoor backbone. The San Luis Rey River Trail runs about nine flat, smooth miles along the water and ducks under the cross streets, so a ride toward the harbor rarely stops for traffic. Mance Buchanon Park on College Boulevard has open lawns, shade trees, walking paths and a trail access point. Fireside Park sits among the houses at Fireside Drive and Parkside Street, and the Heritage Park Village Museum is on Peyri Drive. Mission Avenue is where breakfast happens. O'side Bakery turns out breakfast burritos and pastries and also bakes for other local restaurants. Pit Stop Diner, a few doors down, serves pancakes and burgers all day under 1950s decor, and people go for the banana splits. San Luis Rey Bakery on North El Camino Real handles breakfast plates, Mexican sweet bread and celebration cakes. Errands rarely take long. Stater Bros. and Albertsons are both on Mission Avenue, Ralphs anchors the Old Grove Road center, and Sprouts is on College Boulevard. The Mission branch of the Oceanside Public Library and the city pool share the same block of Mission Avenue. Most trips start in a car, with State Route 76 heading west to Interstate 5 and east toward Bonsall. Route 76 and the Mission Avenue strip carry heavy traffic through the day, and most of the neighborhood is laid out for driving rather than walking. Living in San Luis Rey means your Saturday errands pass a church that has stood since 1815, and nobody here treats that as unusual.
