San Ysidro sits at the very bottom of San Diego, pressed up against the busiest land crossing on the border, and the rhythm of the port of entry sets the pace for the whole neighborhood. It began as farmland and as the Little Landers colony of 1908, and the city annexed it in 1957. Housing is a mix of eras. Modest homes from the 1920s still stand in the original Little Landers blocks, joined by postwar houses, apartments and bungalow courts built when the region needed housing fast. Small casitas with stucco walls, red tile roofs and arched doorways turn up on many lots, and newer affordable projects such as Casa Familiar's Living Rooms at the Border, set around a restored 1927 church, show where the neighborhood is headed. San Ysidro Community Park on West Park Avenue, dedicated in 1983, is the neighborhood's central park. Larsen Field holds ballfields and a playground near the outlets, Vista Terrace Park has a public pool, and Coral Gate Park adds a smaller green. The open land of the Tijuana River Valley lies just to the west. El Rincon Cocina, opened in 2017 on West San Ysidro Boulevard, is the local table to know, with Guadalajara-style menudo, carne en su jugo, chilaquiles and tortillas made fresh. Taco shops, fruit stands and bakeries line both main boulevards. Las Americas Premium Outlets, the biggest outlet center in San Diego, has its own food court right at the border. El Super and Smart & Final Extra share a center on West San Ysidro Boulevard for groceries. The San Ysidro branch library opened its 15,000-square-foot building on Beyer Boulevard in 2019. The Blue Line ends at the San Ysidro Transit Center, with another stop at Beyer Boulevard, and Interstates 5 and 805 and SR 905 all meet here. The crossing brings constant traffic and crowds, and border wait times shape the day for anyone who goes back and forth. Murals brighten the commercial district, and with the 1924 library, the 1927 church and the new border buildings a few blocks apart, San Ysidro holds a century of border history in a very small space.
