Serra Mesa, San Diego, CA

Serra Mesa fills the tableland bracketed by Interstates 805 and 15 in central San Diego, with Aero Drive along the north and canyons tumbling south toward Mission Valley. It took its name in 1961, when a community contest picked Junipero Serra to cover a patchwork of tracts that builders had sold under names like Princess Park, Murray Ridge Estates and Mission Village. The housing story starts with the Navy, which put up the Cabrillo Heights housing project in the early 1950s. Most of the tracts around it went up in a ten-year rush that followed, so the typical street is a run of modest single-family homes from the late 1950s and early 1960s, many remodeled since. Navy family housing such as Cabrillo Village is still part of the mix. Civita, on the old quarry land at the southern edge, adds a newer and much denser layer. Ruffin Canyon is the local wild space, more than 84 acres of coastal sage scrub that runs from Ruffin Road toward the valley, reached from trailheads on both sides of Taft Middle School on Gramercy Drive. The paths are rough and unpaved. Civita Park is the polished counterpart, stepping down the quarry wall with a waterfall, an amphitheater and a dog park, and on Saturday mornings the Mission Valley Certified Farmers Market sets out stalls beside it. Cabrillo Heights Park and the community park on Village Glen Drive have the ball fields. The small center on Sandrock Road holds two neighborhood standbys. Cali Cafe makes Vietnamese coffee and acai bowls, and Thai Pepper Cuisine next door cooks family-recipe Thai for a sit-down dinner or takeout. Down at The Row at Civita, La Clochette is a French-leaning cafe known for pour overs, matcha and house-made syrups. The Vons on Murphy Canyon Road handles groceries on the east side, with a Walmart close by, and the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa library sits on Aero Drive. Getting around means the car, though the freeway access is excellent, with I-805, I-15 and State Route 163 all a few minutes from most front doors. Restaurants are scattered across small strip centers, and few homes can walk to more than one or two. Kearny Mesa's offices sit just over Aero Drive and the Mission Valley malls lie below the canyons, so most of a week's driving stays inside a couple of miles.
