Neighborhood Review

Key Words:

Canyon rail-trail access, Wooded hillside seclusion, Quick drive to Montclair

Shepherd Canyon follows a narrow, wooded ravine that climbs northeast from Highway 13 toward Skyline Boulevard. Homes line Shepherd Canyon Road and perch on zig-zagging spurs like Chelton Drive and Banning Drive, hugging steep, tree-covered slopes. Architecture ranges from 1940s chalets and mid-century contemporaries to a sprinkling of newer custom builds, nearly all positioned for filtered canyon or bay peeks through towering redwoods and eucalyptus. Recreation is built in. The Montclair Railroad Trail and Shepherd Canyon Park run the length of the valley floor with playgrounds, open fields, and a paved path popular with dog walkers and joggers. At the upper end, Huckleberry Preserve and the Hills Swim & Tennis Club sit just outside the boundary, while Montclair Village’s grocery stores, cafés, and weekend farmers market lie a quick three-minute drive downhill. Streets lack continuous sidewalks, yet traffic is light, and the flat rail-trail makes stroller loops easy. Daily life feels woodsy and low-key. Properties are generally well kept, gardens blend with native understory, and the canyon walls buffer city noise. Residents enjoy a distinctly “in-nature” vibe without giving up fast access to Highway 13 or Rockridge BART.
