Sierra Madre Villa Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Eaton Canyon Falls, Henninger Trailhead, Fire Rebuilding

Sierra Madre Villa takes its name from a 19th-century resort hotel that once stood on a high shelf of land above Pasadena, and today the neighborhood is defined by the canyon on its western edge. The trailheads for Eaton Canyon Falls and Henninger Flats sit at its edge, with Upper Hastings Ranch to the east. The homes are foothill houses on sloping lots, many of them midcentury and some architect-designed. The January 2025 Eaton Fire burned through this edge of the city, so rebuilding is part of daily life, and cleared lots sit next to houses that came through intact. Eaton Canyon is the neighborhood's backyard, though the Los Angeles County natural area and its trails remain closed until further notice after the fire. When the canyon reopens, the hike to the falls will again start a few minutes from home. Food and errands are a short drive down to Foothill Boulevard. Panda Inn, opened by Andrew Cherng and his father in 1973 before Panda Express existed, serves Mandarin and Szechuan cooking there. The Hastings Ranch shopping center has a Whole Foods, a Ralphs and a Peet's Coffee, and Trader Joe's sits nearby on Rosemead Boulevard. The end-of-line Metro A Line station on Sierra Madre Villa Avenue is the rail link toward Old Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, and the 210 Freeway is right beside it. The tradeoff is plain. This is a car-first foothill neighborhood still recovering from a major wildfire, and its main outdoor draw is closed for now. Even with the canyon closed, the San Gabriels fill the view at the top of most streets in Sierra Madre Villa, and living this close to the mountains is still the reason people choose it.
