South Inglewood is ranked #2 of 7 neighborhoods in Inglewood with an overall score of 2.8/5. Its standout factor is nearby merchants (4.0/5). It ranks 2nd of 7 in Inglewood for safety. The trade-offs are public spaces (2.1/5) and curb appeal (2.4/5).
South Inglewood gathers around the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Imperial Highway, a part of Inglewood that only joined the city through a 1961 annexation. It feels more like a crossroads than a downtown, with shopping centers on the big corners and residential streets filling in behind them. Housing here is mostly single-story postwar homes on regular blocks, with stucco walls, small front yards and driveways. Apartment complexes line some of the busier roads, and many houses have added rooms or back units over the years. Imperial Highway is where the best-known meal is. Coni'Seafood serves Mexican seafood with ceviches, aguachiles, marlin tacos and whole snook, and it has drawn critics' attention for years. Winchell's on Crenshaw and the Starbucks on West Imperial cover the morning coffee and donut run. Parks are thin inside the neighborhood itself. Center Park in nearby Inglewood Knolls and the lake paths at Hollywood Park are the closest places for a real walk, both a short drive away. The Crenshaw Imperial Branch Library on Crenshaw Boulevard is the local stop for books, computers and a quiet hour. Groceries are well covered. Superior Grocers and Smart and Final both sit on South Crenshaw, and Grocery Outlet on West Imperial handles discount runs, so most errands stay within a few blocks of the main intersection. The 105 runs along Imperial, with Metro's C Line station at Crenshaw giving rail access toward LAX, Norwalk and the K Line. The freeway is the tradeoff. Living near Imperial means steady traffic and some road noise, and the shopping centers are built for cars more than for strolling. In return, South Inglewood keeps almost everything close at hand, and a plate of aguachile on Imperial is never far from home.
