South Park wraps around the eastern edge of Balboa Park in San Diego, a streetcar-era neighborhood whose small business blocks on Fern Street, Juniper Street and 30th Street feel more like a village than a city district. North Park sits above it and Golden Hill below, and the pace here lands somewhere between the two. Homes date mostly to the years after the neighborhood was laid out around 1905 along streetcar lines that carried residents downtown. Craftsman bungalows and Spanish Revival houses sit on compact lots, courtyard apartments fill in between, and plenty of front porches face the sidewalk. Yards are small and the houses are old, so a remodel in progress somewhere on the block is normal. Balboa Park does the work of a backyard. The Grape Street Dog Park, five acres of off-leash field at the park's edge, looks across the Balboa Park Golf Course, and the open space of Juniper Canyon runs along the north side of South Park. A morning loop can take in both before the shops open. Buona Forchetta opened its first location on Beech Street in 2011 and still turns out build-your-own pasta alongside more than 30 kinds of pizza. The Rose Wine Bar on 30th Street pours natural wine and has a following for its salad pie. Station Tavern on Fern Street serves burgers inside a former streetcar stop that saw riders between 1929 and 1948. For coffee there is Communal Coffee, which pours lattes from a vintage trailer beside a big patio, or Seven Seas Roasting Co., a direct-trade roaster also on Fern. Errands mix walking and driving. Food Bowl Market on Cedar Street handles produce, meat and the quick stops, but a full supermarket run means getting in the car. MTS Route 2 runs along 30th Street toward North Park and down Broadway to downtown, and the 94 freeway is close for anything farther. The commercial blocks keep late hours, with live music and DJ nights at Whistle Stop Bar on Fern, so houses nearest the bars hear the evening crowd. Quarterly walkabouts pull neighbors and shop owners onto the sidewalks, and those nights show how much of daily life in South Park happens on foot.
