Dictionary Hill rises above Spring Valley, an unincorporated East County community bordered by Lemon Grove and Casa de Oro, and its slopes set the tone for much of the area, with winding roads and steep grades that pay off in wide views. Away from the hill, the streets around Bancroft Drive and Troy Street settle into ordinary suburban blocks. The housing is mostly postwar, built from the 1950s into the 1980s, and the one-story ranch house is the default. On the hill and other slopes, homes sit on raised foundations or step down in split levels with decks hanging over the canyon side. Some pockets still have larger semi-rural parcels, and later infill added two-story houses, townhomes and some manufactured homes. Dictionary Hill is the outdoor centerpiece. The county preserve covers 175 acres of sage scrub and chaparral, and a 2.1-mile loop from the Barcelona Street kiosk climbs about 565 feet to a summit with views across San Diego to Point Loma and the Coronado Bridge. Lamar County Park, at 3180 Bancroft Drive, is the easy option, with nearly nine acres of lawn, a pavilion, barbecues and a playground. The Bancroft Ranch House, the 1863 adobe tied to the spring the community is named for, sits on Memory Lane, though it no longer operates as a museum. Local food leans toward family-run counters. Zad Mediterranean Cuisine, in the center on Sweetwater Springs Boulevard, serves Iraqi grilled kababs and bread baked in-house. Coffee runs usually head to Campo Road in neighboring Casa de Oro. Errands mean a short hop by car. Save-A-Lot on Broadway covers the western side, and the bigger supermarkets sit along Campo Road past the community edge. Routes 94 and 125 carry commuters toward downtown San Diego and the rest of East County, and most households drive. Hills cut both ways. The views are real, but the streets that earn them are steep and winding, and slope lots need steady attention to drainage and retaining walls. Spring Valley still takes its bearings from that hill, the old lookout where a founder once climbed to check whether the steamer had reached port.
