Stockton is a small residential neighborhood on the east side of central San Diego, wedged between Grant Hill and Interstate 15, with Golden Hill above it and Logan Heights below. It takes its name from Robert Field Stockton, the Navy commodore who helped bring California under American control in the 1840s. The housing is mostly older homes on short, grid-like streets, and nearly all of the businesses line Imperial Avenue and Market Street. Small local shops scattered through the area handle what commerce there is. The J Street Mini Park is the neighborhood's own green space. The city spent more than $1.5 million rebuilding it, and when it reopened in 2021 the small lot, under 12,000 square feet, had fresh playground gear, workout stations, seating and lights. The Stockton Recreation Center on 32nd Street, which shares a campus with King-Chavez Primary Academy, opened in 1978 and built a reputation in the 1980s and 1990s for its basketball teams, the Stockton Knights, which won several championships. For a bigger lawn and a view, Grant Hill Park is a few minutes west. Catalano's Pizzeria on Imperial Avenue has been hand-stretching its dough every day since 1996 and still advertises two-for-one pizza deals, with subs, lasagna and wings on the menu. It opens at 7 in the morning. Taco shops and fast-food stops line Market Street, and Golden Hill's cafes and restaurants sit just up the hill to the north. Errands in Stockton depend on the car. Corner markets along Imperial Avenue cover the basics, while a full grocery run means driving downtown or out to a larger store. Orange Line trains serve the 32nd & Commercial station, and I-15 runs along the eastern edge. Freeway noise and the lack of a real grocery store are the daily costs here. The upside is a quiet run of residential streets close to downtown, anchored by a recreation center whose old trophies and retired jerseys show how much basketball has meant to this part of the city.
