Sunkist Park, Culver City, CA

Sunkist Park is a compact Culver City neighborhood of postwar single-family houses, fenced in by Sepulveda Boulevard, Ballona Creek and Mesmer Avenue near the spot where the 405 meets the 90. Once you turn off Sepulveda the traffic drops away fast, and the grid of flat, quiet streets feels farther from the freeways than it is. Houses are mostly classic mid-century and postwar single-story homes, and a good share have been remodeled or expanded over the decades. Some blocks keep a steady line of original rooflines, while others mix in larger rebuilds. Yards are modest, and the streets are flat enough for easy bike rides. El Marino Park on Berryman Avenue is the neighborhood's gathering spot, with a pair of softball diamonds, a soccer field, a basketball court, a playground, picnic areas and a ceramics studio with its own kiln. El Marino Language School, a Spanish and Japanese immersion school, sits beside it. Food close to home is mostly casual. Chargha House serves Pakistani plates on Sepulveda, and Winchell's Donut House holds down a corner of Jefferson Boulevard. A few blocks north in Blanco-Culver Crest, Sorrento Italian Market has been making submarine sandwiches and selling imported pasta since 1963, and it's where plenty of lunch runs end up. Errands are unusually easy. Trader Joe's on Slauson Avenue and Sprouts on Sepulveda Boulevard are both inside the neighborhood, so a grocery trip can be a walk or a quick bike ride. Mar Vista, Del Rey and Playa Vista are all close, and the freeway on-ramps are minutes away. The same freeways bring the main tradeoff. Freeway noise hums steadily on the blocks closest to the 405 and 90 interchange, and Sepulveda backs up at rush hour. Sunkist Park fits a park, two grocery stores and a creek path within a few blocks, which is rare for a neighborhood wedged this close to two freeways.
