Hollywood money built Talmadge. Producer Joseph Schenck named this San Diego subdivision after his wife, the silent film actress Norma Talmadge, and her two sisters, Constance and Natalie, and each of the three has a street. Today the neighborhood runs north from El Cajon Boulevard toward Montezuma Road, with Kensington to the west and the College Area to the east. Homes are the main event. Spanish Revival houses stand next to California bungalows, Cape Cod cottages and Normandy-style homes, and Cliff May designed several of them. In 2024 the original Talmadge Park Estates tract joined the National Register as a historic district, a federal listing that covers the whole collection rather than single houses. Monroe Avenue is the closest thing to a village center. Clem's Station on Monroe is a bar, eatery and small retail shop rolled into one, open from late morning into the evening. Gem Coffee, on Euclid Avenue at the western end, pours specialty drinks and craft brews and has afternoon snacks. Down on El Cajon Boulevard, the north side of Little Saigon is part of Talmadge, with A Chau selling sandwiches and snacks and Minh Ky, a regular on City Heights eating lists, in the same building. Parks are the gap. Talmadge has almost no public park land of its own, so daily walks happen on the residential streets, and the nearest city grass is Kensington's small park on Adams Avenue. Larger open space means a drive out to Mission Trails Regional Park. Errands lean on El Cajon Boulevard, where Asian markets and bakeries handle quick shopping, while a full supermarket usually means getting in the car. Rapid 215 buses on the boulevard connect to downtown and the SDSU campus, and Interstate 8 and State Route 15 are both close. The quiet interior blocks and the busy boulevard feel like two different places. Talmadge homeowners get a period house inside a National Register district, with a bowl of pho waiting a few blocks south.
