University City is really two neighborhoods split by a canyon. The freeway triangle of San Diego framed by I-5, I-805 and SR-52 began as a city-planned community in 1959, laid out to house people working at the new UC San Diego, and Rose Canyon now separates its quiet southern streets from the towers and campuses of the north. South of the canyon, around Governor Drive, the older section once sold as University Square went up from the 1960s into the 1980s, and it is mostly single-family homes with a neighborhood shopping strip at its center. North of the canyon, the land filled in from the late 1980s on with office and lab buildings, Westfield UTC and dense apartment communities such as La Jolla Colony and La Jolla Crossroads, with Scripps and UC San Diego medical towers along Genesee Avenue and the university campus itself on the western side. Rose Canyon Open Space Park is the green spine, where a trail follows the railroad tracks past vernal pools and habitat for nearly a hundred bird species. Standley Park and Doyle Park each have a recreation center, and Doyle adds an off-leash dog park split for large and small dogs. Governor Drive keeps the south side fed. Lorna's Italian Kitchen has served lasagna, chicken Marsala and its house Tag Bol there since 1988. Up north, Stella Italianfare on Towne Centre Drive does Roman-style plates and a well-liked tiramisu, and Zumbar Coffee & Tea roasts its own beans on Roselle Street near the Sorrento Valley line. Westfield UTC adds a long list of counters and sit-down restaurants. Daily errands in University City split along the same line. Vons and Sprouts handle the south side on Governor Drive, near the University Community Library, while the north has Vons on Regents Road and the mall. The Blue Line trolley, open since 2021, stops at the UTC Transit Center, Executive Drive and the UC San Diego medical campus. Genesee Avenue is the only major road across Rose Canyon, and a long-debated Regents Road bridge has never been built, so trips between Governor Drive and UTC funnel onto one road. The same gap keeps through traffic off the south side's residential streets.
