Uptown is the arts-and-entertainment heart of downtown Oakland, the district the city officially designated as such in 2009 and the one most responsible for the area's nightlife revival. Centered on the upper end of Broadway and Telegraph, it turned a stretch once dominated by parking lots into a dense core of theaters, bars, galleries, and restaurants. The two landmark movie palaces define it: the 1931 Paramount, a stunning Art Deco hall, and the Fox Oakland, restored in 2009 and now home to the Oakland School for the Arts. The appeal is energy and access. The Fox, the Paramount, the New Parish, and a wall of bars and restaurants make this the East Bay's go-to night-out district, the monthly First Friday art walk spills through the surrounding blocks, and 19th Street BART and frequent buses put the region a short walk away. Housing is mostly newer apartments and lofts above and around the venues. Green space inside the boundary is limited, with Lake Merritt and its shoreline a few blocks east instead. Uptown is built for people who want transit, theaters, and a constantly active dining and music scene at the doorstep. The honest tradeoffs are the downtown-core realities, nightlife noise, scarce and paid parking, limited private green space, and a street scene that still runs polished-to-gritty block by block, but few Oakland addresses put this much culture within a five-minute walk.
