Valley Center sits in the rolling hills of inland North County, a rural community of about 27 square miles northeast of Escondido in San Diego County. Behind a typical gate out here you might find an avocado grove, a horse pasture or a few acres left mostly wild. Homes tend to come with land. Single-story ranch houses on two to ten acres are the classic pattern, some with stables and arenas, others ringed by orange, grapefruit or avocado trees, and a few growing grapes for nearby winemakers. Park Circle is the exception, a master-planned subdivision that started building in the early 2000s with smaller lots, cul-de-sacs and new houses. Ridge Ranch leans toward Mediterranean-style estates. Public outdoor space is run by the local parks district. Its main grounds on Lilac Road have athletic fields, a pavilion and a community hall, and Adams Community Park on Cole Grade Road has the community pool and public tennis courts. Little League, softball and equestrian programs fill the calendar. The trails of Daley Ranch and the water at Lake Wohlford sit just over the Escondido line to the south. Valley Center Road works as the main street, and most of the food is strung along it. Ruthii's Coffee, set behind a gas station at 28010, pulls espresso from a house roast made by Christy Coffee Co. and makes its own tiramisu. Fat Ivor's Rib Rack is the place for slow-smoked ribs and a game on the big screens, and Country Junction Deli builds sandwiches to order and scoops ice cream. On Lilac Road, Casa Reveles has served Mexican food and margaritas since 1995. Errands are spread out. Valley Center Foods on Valley Center Road and Lilac Foods on Lilac Road handle everyday groceries, and the county library branch on Cole Grade Road has a community room and a 3D printer. Bigger shopping trips run south to Escondido, and there is no rail or freeway inside the community, so nearly everything happens by car. Distance is the real cost. Long drives come with the acreage, and a forgotten ingredient can mean a run down to Escondido. The reward is a lot of sky, and evenings when the loudest sound is somebody's horse.
