Westlake Village feels unusually composed because it was planned that way from the beginning. Mature trees and underground utilities keep the streets visually clean, while the lake gives the city a recognizable center even for residents who do not live directly on the water. Housing reflects several generations of planned development. Ranch, contemporary and split-level homes from the late 1960s and 1970s sit near the lake and Lindero Canyon Road. Mediterranean-style subdivisions followed in the 1980s and 1990s, and newer gated or hillside communities expanded along the southern and eastern edges. The shoreline and boating privileges are managed through the Westlake Lake Management Association and Westlake Yacht Club, so a Westlake Village address does not automatically include a dock or the right to launch a boat. For residents with access, the lake creates a lifestyle rarely found in inland Southern California. For everyone else, it remains more visual centerpiece than public park. Public recreation centers on Westlake Village Community Park, with ballfields, basketball courts and a skate park, and the smaller Berniece Bennett Park near the civic area. The Westlake Village Inn adds a longtime resort and dining destination, while local schools include White Oak Elementary and Oaks Christian School. Shopping and services are convenient along Thousand Oaks Boulevard, Agoura Road and the freeway corridor. The city boundary can be confusing. The Los Angeles County portion incorporated as Westlake Village in 1981, while much of the original master-planned community across the county line became part of Thousand Oaks. A Westlake Village mailing address can therefore come with different city services and schools depending on which side of the line it occupies. US-101 runs through town and brings steady noise and congestion, especially when there is no practical alternate route. The surrounding hills also carry substantial wildfire risk, as the Woolsey Fire demonstrated in 2018. Westlake Village is best for residents who value order, landscaping and a calm, upscale suburban environment. Its ethos is polished and recreation-oriented, with the lake at the center and the freeway never far away.
