Woodland West starts with a museum. The Great Valley Museum and Planetarium sits on the Modesto Junior College West Campus off Blue Gum Avenue, with exhibits on Central Valley habitats and planetarium shows. Around it, the neighborhood fills the west side of Modesto, with Blue Gum Avenue on the north, Kansas Avenue on the south, Carpenter Road on the east and Morse Road on the west. It is a mixed area. Residential blocks, including the Symphony Tract, share the map with the college, county offices and commercial strips, which gives the west side a looser feel than the grid closer to downtown. The college and county facilities bring weekday daytime activity, while evenings and weekends feel noticeably quieter. For outdoor time, Woodland Park is inside the neighborhood and Charles M. Sharpe Park sits right next to it. The West Campus library adds a quiet public room. The planetarium shows and campus events make the museum worth a visit even if you do not live nearby. North Carpenter Road is the main food stretch. Huckleberry's Breakfast and Lunch at 901 North Carpenter has a Cajun theme, with fried green tomatoes, crab cake Benedict and caramel pecan pancakes, and it closes at three. Medina Market and Grill, farther along the same road, mixes a Middle Eastern grocery with a grill. Michael's Pizza Bar and Grill has a motorcycle theme and a weekend brunch, Saigon One serves Vietnamese, Tamales Sinaloa sells tamales, and Dutch Bros covers coffee. Cost Less Food Company is the nearest full grocery, and the arterials make a car the easy choice for most trips. Because Woodland West blends housing with a campus, county buildings and strip commercial, one block can feel quite different from the next. Notice which end of the neighborhood you are standing in before you judge it. The museum and the library are the two public rooms that anchor the area.
