Al Tahoe is the oldest name on the city map, and it belongs to a person. In 1907 Almerin "Al" Sprague built the three-story Al Tahoe Inn on this stretch of shoreline, renaming what had been called Rowlands, and the post office made the name official in 1908. When South Lake Tahoe incorporated in 1965, Al Tahoe was one of the six communities stitched together to make the city, and it has stayed the civic heart ever since: library, museum, and city offices all sit in the grid.
