Fallen Leaf is barely a neighborhood in the usual sense. It is a summer civilization with a founding professor. Stanford naturalist William Wightman Price arrived in the 1890s, ran a boys' camp near Glen Alpine, and built Fallen Leaf Lodge at the lake's south end, where his family raised the cabins along what is still called Rustic Row. Stanford's alumni association bought the lodge property in 1968, and Stanford Sierra Camp has anchored the far shore ever since. The lake itself is the argument: locals will tell you, quietly, that it outshines Tahoe. A famously one-lane road winds in past generations-old cabins, some on private land, others on Forest Service recreation leases, and both kinds trade rarely. The Glen Alpine trailhead pours straight into Desolation Wilderness from the road's end. Winter mostly closes the show, services are minimal, and the road demands patience and reverse-gear diplomacy in July. For the families who hold these cabins, none of that is a complaint. It is the moat.
