Bijou is French for jewel, a name credited variously to French Canadian lumberjacks and to the Bliss lumber dynasty, and its real inheritance is industrial: in 1884 George Washington Chubbuck built a logging railroad from Taylor's Landing, near today's Bijou, up Lake Valley toward Meyers, and this stretch of shoreline spent the 1880s shipping the basin's forests off to the Comstock mines. The trees grew back, and Bijou became the middle of the city in every sense, a broad stretch behind the Highway 50 corridor mixing locals' streets, the little 9-hole Bijou golf course, and the city's best casual park. Bijou Community Park is the anchor: disc golf, a skate park, a dog park, and ballfields that stay busy from thaw to first snow. The corridor edge is the compromise, with motel-era properties and highway noise along 50, and block quality shifts fast as you move around. Prices reflect that honesty, which is why plenty of first south shore purchases happen here. The jewel name may still be aspirational. The park and the location are not.
