Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Guard Gated, Rancho Los Alamitos, Custom Homes

Bixby Hill is a guard-gated neighborhood on a low rise in east Long Beach, built on land that was once the heart of the Bixby family's vast Rancho Los Alamitos cattle ranch. The historic ranch house and its gardens still sit in the middle of the neighborhood, open to the public as one of the city's signature historic sites, which gives Bixby Hill a sense of place newer gated tracts cannot manufacture. Behind the gate, custom homes from the 1970s line a set of quiet cul-de-sacs on generous lots, with condos and townhomes filling out the edges. Cal State Long Beach is next door and Recreation Park's golf and trails are minutes away. The tradeoffs are predictable for the type: HOA dues, gate routines, and a car-dependent layout with no retail inside. The reward is privacy, space, and one of the most distinctive settings in the city.
