Bostonia is the northeast quarter of El Cajon, the part of the city above Interstate 8 and east of Highway 67, where the valley floor runs north toward Santee and the unincorporated community of the same name. Broadway and North Second Street carry most of the traffic and nearly all of the businesses, and the residential blocks fill in between them. Housing here is mostly single-family. A large share went up during the building boom of the 1940s and 1950s, so expect modest one-story houses on flat streets, with townhouse and condo complexes scattered through and a few homes on higher ground that look out across the valley toward the mountains. Albert Van Zanten Park on Greenfield Drive is the big open space, about fifteen acres with ball fields, soccer fields, basketball and a 440-yard track. Wells Park and Kennedy Park sit just across the freeway in the downtown neighborhood, and Wells adds a fenced dog park and pickleball courts. For food, Janet's Cafe, also on Greenfield Drive, serves breakfast all day, from omelettes and biscuits and gravy to homemade chili and fresh-baked pies. Marechiaro's on North Second Street has been family run since 1955 and is the call for fresh pasta or its House Torpedo sandwich. Mamma Rosa, a family Italian kitchen on East Main Street, dates to 1982. Errands rarely take long. Albertsons and Food 4 Less are both on Broadway, along with taco shops, bakeries and independent markets. Highway 67 heads north to Santee and Lakeside from the western edge, Interstate 8 runs along the south side, and the trolley hub on South Marshall Avenue puts three lines within reach. Living in Bostonia means living along big roads. Broadway and Second Street are wide, busy commercial streets, so most trips happen by car, and summer afternoons this far inland run much hotter than anywhere near the coast. Most of what a week asks for sits on two roads here, and the quieter streets between them are where the neighborhood keeps its own pace.
