Where Jamacha Road crosses East Washington Avenue, a cluster of markets, cafes and restaurants serves as the everyday crossroads for Granite Hills, the small southeast edge of El Cajon set between Interstate 8 and the unincorporated county hills that run toward Rancho San Diego. The neighborhood is compact, mostly residential, and oriented around that one busy intersection. Homes here are mainly single-family houses from El Cajon's postwar growth years, on streets that grow hillier toward the eastern edge. Past the city line, the same hillside streets continue into the county community that shares the name. Groceries are the neighborhood's strong suit. Lulus International Market on Jamacha Road carries produce, a butcher counter, fresh seafood and international pantry items, and Harvest Ranch Market down the road leans gourmet, with prime beef, rare cheeses and wine tastings. For a meal, Crafted Greens on Jamacha Road builds fresh, organic bowls and plates. The rest of the strip fills in with pizza, sushi, Mexican seafood and a steakhouse, so dinner rarely means leaving the corner. Parks sit just outside the boundary. There is no public park inside the neighborhood's lines, so a game of catch or a walk on grass means heading to Kennedy Park or Wells Park on East Madison Avenue in the downtown neighborhood. Kennedy has a skatepark and a lighted ball field, and Wells has a dog park and pickleball. The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge lies to the south toward Rancho San Diego. Interstate 8 is close for commutes west to San Diego or east to the mountains, and Jamacha Road runs south toward Rancho San Diego. The trolley is a drive away at the El Cajon Transit Center across town, so most people here drive. Living in Granite Hills comes down to that corner on Jamacha Road, where a grocery run, a coffee and a takeout dinner can all happen in one parking lot.
