Camp Richardson is a historic resort first and a neighborhood almost incidentally. Captain Alonzo Richardson bought this stretch of shoreline in 1924, put up cabins and a lakefront pavilion, added the hotel in 1926 and the long pier in 1927, and the compound under the giant pines has been collecting summers ever since. When new operators took over in 2024, the mandate was to preserve the old family feeling, which tells you how protective the south shore is of this place. The Beacon's deck and its rum runners are an institution, and the Pope-Baldwin bike path rolls right through, linking beaches for miles. Private homes here amount to a handful, ringed by Forest Service land and summer crowds that arrive by the thousand. Living at Camp Rich means sharing it. The compensation is that everyone else has to go home on Sunday.
