Carmelitos is a large public-housing community in North Long Beach, and one of the oldest in Southern California, built between 1939 and the early 1940s on roughly 50 acres off Via Wanda. Designed by Long Beach architect Kenneth Wing, it began as low-rise garden housing, was pressed into wartime use for aircraft workers, and has served as affordable housing ever since, today with more than 700 units split between family and senior residents. Unlike a tower-style project, it spreads across landscaped grounds with courts, a senior center, a family resource center, a community clinic, and youth programs on site. It is owned and managed by the county housing authority, so it is not a for-sale neighborhood in the usual sense. As a place, its defining traits are its history, its mix of family and senior housing, and a North Long Beach location close to Houghton Park and the Atlantic Avenue corridor.
