Cheviot Hills is one of the few Los Angeles neighborhoods where the streets actually roll, curving over low hills between Rancho Park Golf Course and the Hillcrest Country Club. It sits between Rancho Park and Beverlywood, with Century City a short drive north, and film crews have used its winding blocks since the Laurel and Hardy days. Houses in Cheviot Hills mostly date from the 1920s through the 1950s. Architect Raphael Soriano's Strauss-Lewis House is here as well. The Cheviot Hills Recreation Center on Motor Avenue works as a shared backyard. Next door, Rancho Park Golf Course is a public 18-hole layout with a par-3 course, a driving range and a restaurant at the clubhouse. Irving Schachter Park on Beverwil Drive is a smaller green, and the Palms-Rancho Park Branch Library sits on Overland Avenue. Food is mostly along Pico. John O'Groats has been turning out breakfasts on Pico for decades and is known for its biscuits, and The Apple Pan serves its hickory burgers just west in Rancho Park. Groceries mean the Vons on National Boulevard in neighboring Beverlywood or the stores along Westwood Boulevard. The residential streets have almost no shops of their own, so the quiet comes with more driving. Pico and Motor carry heavy traffic during peak commute hours, and the walk to a coffee or a grocery run is longer here than in the flatter neighborhoods nearby. Dozens of movies and TV shows have borrowed these curving streets, so a Cheviot Hills block lined with production trucks on a weekday morning barely draws a second look.
