Christmas Valley runs long and narrow along the Upper Truckee River, walled in by Echo Summit on one side and Luther Pass on the other. It is the snowiest inhabited corner of the south shore, and for one summer the wall above it held the most famous track in America: the 1968 US Olympic trials ran at Echo Summit directly overhead, with athletes training among the pines at 7,377 feet. Cabins and mountain homes line the corridor off South Upper Truckee Road, with a rural rhythm the city grids lost decades ago. One road carries the whole valley, and deep winters are non-negotiable. This is also ground firefighters famously held when the Caldor Fire came over the ridge, a fact residents mention with some pride. For river-and-forest living with a real address, the south shore does not do it better.
