Cordelia anchors Fairfield's southwestern edge, right where Interstate 80, Highway 12 and the end of Interstate 680 come together. Captain Robert Waterman, a clipper ship master, laid the town out in the early 1850s and gave it his wife's name, which is why the place still sounds more like a person than a freeway exit. The ground here is a patchwork. Hills and open land take up much of the map, a freeway-interchange commercial zone sits in the middle, and housing is gathered into subdivisions, with Cordelia Villages the best known. Homes there range from single-story houses to townhouses, on curving circles and courts. The community park holds the Big Dog Park, and Ridgeview Park gives the housing areas a closer patch of grass. Cordelia homes near those parks have the easiest daily access to them, and the rest of the area leans heavily on driving, since the hills and the interchange spread things out. Eating and visiting here is oddly specific. Slanted Tree Kitchen and Taproom pours craft beer alongside a full kitchen, and Journey Coffee Co. Has a shop on Chadbourne Road for coffee and sandwiches. Visitors drive in for the Jelly Belly Visitor Center, where a factory tour ends at the candy store, and for tastings at the Sonoma Harvest Olive Oil and Winery room. Daily life leans on the freeway. Full grocery shopping is thin inside the area, so regular runs go to other parts of Fairfield, and I-80 is the road to San Francisco or Sacramento. A trip to the city center is a real drive rather than a hop. The commercial strip near the junction is built around fast food and freeway traffic, and the noise of the interchange travels with the location. Within a few miles you can tour a candy factory, taste olive oil and let a dog run, all beside a freeway junction.
