Downtown Concord is where the city actually comes to life, and it's the one neighborhood here built for leaving the car parked. Todos Santos Plaza is the heart of it, a real town square with a granite stage, a Tuesday farmers market, and a ring of restaurants and bars that fill up on summer concert nights. The Concord BART station is an eight-minute walk down Grant Street, which makes this the obvious pick for anyone commuting toward Oakland or San Francisco without a daily drive. Housing runs from older bungalows and apartments to newer infill near the plaza, and the everyday retail access is the best in the city. The honest counterweight is that a downtown is a downtown: it's busier, the streetscape is mixed, and it doesn't have the hushed feel of the hillside neighborhoods. But if you want walkable dinners, transit, and the closest thing Concord has to urban energy, this is the address the rest of the city drives in to enjoy.
