Echo Summit's cabins sit above 7,300 feet at the top of Highway 50's climb out of the basin, and for one strange summer this was the center of American sport. In 1968 the US Olympic men's track and field trials were held here, on a Tartan track laid through the pines of the old Nebelhorn ski area at 7,377 feet to mimic Mexico City's altitude, trees left standing in the infield. Four world records fell on this mountain, the team selected here won twelve gold medals, and the site is now a California Historical Landmark. Today the local landmark is Adventure Mountain's snow-play slopes, and the granite-and-vista setting at the pass is spectacular in every season. Life here is negotiated with the highway: chain controls, closures, and storm traffic define winter logistics, and services live down the hill in Meyers. Winter arrives first and leaves last at this elevation. For snow-first owners that arithmetic works fine, and they get to say world records were set in the neighborhood.
