Florence Avenue gives Florence-Firestone its name and its daily rhythm, and in this part of South Los Angeles, between Slauson and Manchester avenues from the 110 east to Central Avenue, most life happens along the commercial streets. Small family restaurants and bakeries fill Florence, Broadway and Main, and street vendors add to it on busy corners. Homes are a mix of bungalows, Craftsman houses and Spanish-style places, with 1924 as a typical build year. Single-family houses are now the smaller share, since many lots have been rebuilt or split into small multi-unit buildings. The side streets are flat and walkable, with small front yards and a lot of chain-link fences. The food leans local. El Compadre Restaurant on East Florence is a go-to for Mexican seafood, and Golden Ox is a no-frills burger stand a few doors from Main Street. For coffee, the Starbucks in the shopping center on Central Avenue near Slauson is the usual stop. The 61st Street Pocket Park is one of the few public spaces inside the neighborhood, so bigger parks mean a short drive north to South Park or east toward Roosevelt Park. The new Rail to Rail path along Slauson helps, with 5.5 lit, landscaped miles for walking and biking that begin at the A Line's Slauson station. Errands are close. The Ascot Branch Library is on West Florence, Mother's Nutritional Center and small produce markets sit along Florence and Main, and the Central Avenue center has chains for everything else. The 110 runs along the west side, and the A Line stops at Slauson and Florence a few blocks east of Central. On a Saturday, Florence Avenue is where Florence-Firestone gathers, with lines at the taquerias, bakery cases emptying by noon, and bus riders waiting under shop awnings.
