Glenshire is where Truckee families land when they want a yard and a school bus. It is a 1970s-era planned subdivision east of downtown along the Truckee River, run today as the Glenshire-Devonshire Residents Association: roughly 1,350 homes, 236 acres of greenbelt, an eleven-acre pond, and a clubhouse with a seasonal pool, tennis, and a playground. Glenshire Elementary sits inside the neighborhood, which tells you who lives here. The names are 1970s catalog Scottish, Glenshire and Devonshire, with no deeper history behind them, and the subsections range from quarter-acre lots to five- and twenty-acre parcels up in Juniper Hills. Most of it is detached single-family on wooded lots, and the full-time share runs high for the area. The realities are winter and fire. The main route in and out threads the river canyon, and the secondary Hirschdale exit climbs a steep grade that gets hazardous with ice, so a bad storm concentrates traffic. It sits in forested wildland-urban interface on the town's east edge, HOA rules and dues apply, and it is farther from downtown and the hospital than the in-town neighborhoods. For a settled, full-time Truckee address, it is the reliable pick.
